City of Granada Orchestra (OCG) is supported by ‘Granada para la Música’ Consortium, which is formed by Granada City Council, the regional Government of Andalusia and the Provincial Government of Granada.
It was created in 1990 as a classic symphonic orchestra, under the conduction of Juan de Udaeta. From 1994 to 2004 Josep Pons is the principal and artistic conductor, whereas from 2004 to 2008 Jean–Jacques Kantorow assumes the conducting role. From 2008 to 2012, Salvador Mas Conde has been OCG’s principal conductor. Since 2012/2013 season, Andrea Marcon is the artistic conductor.
OCG has been alternating its regular season schedules in Granada and Andalusia with important concerts across Spain and Europe, having performed in the most part of Spanish auditoriums and festivals: International Granada Festival of Dance and Music, Barcelona Grec Festival, International Segoia Music Festival, International Music Festival in Castell de Peralada, International Santander Music Festival, Seville’s Teatro de la Maestranza, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, Palau de la Música and L’Auditori in Barcelona, Madrid Autumn Festival, etc.
Its international presence has lead OCG to Switzerland (Gstaad Festival), Italy (Milan, Teatro alla Scala), Portugal (International Coimbra Music Festival), Austria (Viena Musikverein), as well as several tours across France (1998), Germany (2001 and 2004) and Great Bretain (2005), where it has been acclaimed both by critic and public mainly because of its impressive artistic personality: Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Vienna, Hanover, Manchester, Birmingham…
Plácido Domingo, Narciso Yepes, Enrique Morente, George Benjamin, Victoria de los Ángeles, Motserrat Caballé, Christophe Coin, Carlos Álvarez, Yehudi Menuhin, Christian Zacharias, Krzysztof Penderecki, Christopher Hogwood, David Atherton, Fabio Biondi, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Joaquín Achúcarro, Frans Brüggen, Orfeón Donostiarra, Orfeó Català, Cor de Cambra from Palau de la Música Catalana, British Choral Academy, The King’s Consort, Coro de la Generalitat Valenciana, are some of the many soloists, conductors and choirs who have collaborated with the Orchestra since its foundation.
Among its recordings its is worth mentioning the works released by Harmonia Mundi Records along with Josep Pons, which consisted of Manuel de Falla’s Brief life, The three cornered hat, Nights in the garden of Spain, Bizet’s Arlésienne and Symphony in C, Stravinsky’s Firebird and Card game, Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concert in Aranjuez , among many other works by authors such as Tomás Marco, Kurt Weill, Alberto Ginastera, Nino Rota, Éduard Lalo, etc.
City of Granada Orchestra has received numerous awards such as the Medal of Honor of Granada Royal Academy of Fine Arts, “Manuel de Falla” Andalusia Cultural Award (Cultural Departmen of Andalusia Council), Andalusia Music Award (Andalusia Recording Labels Association), the Medal of Honor of Granada International Dance and Music Festival, as well as the special distinction Andalusia Flag 2015 (35th Anniversary of Andalusia Day).
